Ceramics Art and Perception- Sailing My Universe
This exquisite porcelain vessel titled Fractured Flight was created by Johanna DeMaine. This is one piece of many that she threw on the wheel then finished with decals, gold lusters, etchings, and screen prints. She uses these many different layers to create symbols that portray her universal journey (her life and surroundings). These vessels depict things such as Buddha motifs, butterflies, and Kombi vans that show specific geological, botanical, and cultural influence.
These vessels are extremely beautiful and alone they can hold their own, but together they sing in full voice. Some of the titles of her other vessels are And Where will All the Turtles Go?, The Universe and other Matters, The Long March, Fractured Flight, and Every Cloud. These titles show a deeper understanding of Johanna’s intentions; for us to see that we are the center of our own universe, but even without knowing the titles of these vessels we can understand this.
