Shang Dynasty- Guan Ware
Guan ware was created during the Song Dynasty
from 960-1279 BCE and was made in Jiaotanxia. Guan means imperial and these pieces were created for people of high status. The glazes that were put on these vessels were applied in two to four thick coatings giving it great depth and luminosity. Guan ware is known for their thick blue-green or grey-green color and their crackle pattern that was made with deliberation. The crackle patterns were created during the cooling process and were aesthetically desired due to its similarity to jade.
This Guan ware shown in the picture perfectly epitomizes the song dynasty. The form is elegant and refined as well as has a beautiful stillness about it. The flower shape has flowing contours that draw the eye around piece. The edge of this piece is astonishing; a thin piece of metal is carefully and masterfully placed on the rim and acts as a place to stop the eye and more it around the shape.
